TEGONNI : An African Antigone
by Femi Osofisan
directed by Chuck Mike
Femi Osofisan's epic retelling of Sophocles' classic tale of subversion, insurgency and uprising comes to life with Chuck Mike's vibrant and invigorating theatrical style. Set in Nigeria during a bloody civil war, Osofisan brings his characteristic playfulness to this adaptation where times, cultures and mythologies merge to critique oppression and injustice in a global context. Caught in the middle of a warring family, Tegonni, princess of Oke-Osun, famed artist and leader, must choose between her own life and the ultimate preservation of her culture, her identity and her people. This is a story of a woman's fight for freedom in the face of oppression, and a legend of courage that continues to reverberate for all cultures, nations and times.
In the tradition of African theatre, the play is imbued with extra-textural components including music, song, dance and puppetry. Through aesthetic and formal experimentation, Osofisan paints a distinct world and a pervasive struggle that is both ancient and modern, African and western, mythic and pertinent to our current political lives; a tale that dares us to consider our history and our present, and a myth that challenges us to rise up against all adversity.
